Vikings fall to Hatchets
in OT Thriller

By: Larry D. Hembree

-Washington- What started out as looking like a blowout nearly finished in a come from behind victory for the Barr-Reeve Vikings against the Washington Hatchets in their annual night before Thanksgiving opener.  The Vikings fell to the Hatchets 62-56 in OT.
The game was really a game of two halves as the Hatchets punished the Vikings with solid defense in the first half, but the second half saw a much more focused Barr-Reeve attack led by Trey Hughes who poured in 39 points for the evening.  What was more remarkable about Hughes’ performance was that both he and his teammates were shut out in the first quarter 13-0.  Hughes managed to stage 10 of the Vikings 13 points in the second quarter to close the gap by two at 24-13.
The second half of the game at the Hatchet House was marked by a newly inspired Viking attack that rapidly closed the gap.  Hughes would pour in 29 points including the overtime period.  As fans began to leave the gymnasium in the middle of the fourth quarter it looked like a sure Hatchet victory but Hughes and company would having nothing to do with it.  The Vikings scratched for every possession and by utilizing some smart fouling techniques worked their way back into contention at the end of regulation.
Hughes managed to split to Hatchet defenders and hit an off balance three that sent the game into overtime at 49-49.  During the OT Barr-Reeve ran out of gas and the game became a free-throw shooting contest that eventually saw the Hatchets prevail by six.  Hughes committed just three turnovers in 35 minutes of action while contributing with three assists.  Kendall Murphy added nine points for the Vikings.
The Barr-Reeve defense did some damage of their own forcing the Hatchets into 14 turnovers.  The Hatchets, led by 6’8” Cody Zeller controlled the battle for the boards by a margin of 28-21.  It appeared late in the third quarter and early in the fourth the Hatchets had finally slowed Hughes down by double teaming when he got the ball.  Hatchet Junior guard Sam Gines topped WHS with 20, followed closely by senior guard Cody Osmon with 19. Sophomore center Cody Zeller added 13 points and just missed a double-double with eight rebounds.
Barr-Reeve won the JV contest 39-36.  Jonathon Gingerich led the Viking with 12.  Barr-Reeve will be in action next on December 5th at home against the Pike Central Chargers.
