Barr-Reeve Vikings win over WC 63-47
By Louis Kavanaugh Jr.
The Barr-Reeve Vikings got off to a good start over WC, but the Cardinals continued to battle the Vikings.  Christian Duncheon, who scored 25 points on the night, scored 1-2 free throws before a 3- pointer by WC gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead. That would be the last lead for WC as Christian Duncheon scored the first 8 points for the Vikings and helped take them to an 8-5 lead. The Vikings increased the margin to 14-6 on a basket by Trey Hughes and then outscored the Cardinals 12-2 to take a 26-8 lead after one quarter. Christian Duncheon scored 10 points in the quarter and Jonathan Gingerich came off the bench to score six to give the Vikings a great start. During that first quarter, Bill Brown called two time outs trying to slow down the Vikings charge.
The Vikings continued to play well into the second period as a basket by Brandon Graber gave the Vikings a 20 point lead at 30-10 but the Vikings did not look as sharp after that. The Vikings still led 36-30 at halftime but were turning the ball over and not hitting the basket as well as past games. This is the first game in the new year. The Cardinals continued to cut into the 20 point lead when they cut it to 10 with about 2 minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Vikings held on to lead 48-35 at the end of three. Christian Duncheon hit a basket to start the fourth period to increase the margin to 15 as the Vikings continued to slowly increase the margin in the fourth period. The biggest lead of the night came at 63-40 on a basket by Christian Duncheon with about 4 minutes to go in the game. WC scored the last seven points of the game to make the final score 63-47.
Christian Duncheon led the way for the Vikings with 25 points with 4-5 from the line. Also in double figures was Jonathan Gingerich with 12 points on two 3-pointers and 2-3 from the line. Others scoring were Trey Hughes with 8 points and 4-8 from the line, in what is considered an off night for Trey, Ashton Wagler with 7 on  one 3-pointer, Jordan Sinnott 4,  Josh Swartzentruber a 3-pointer,  and Willie Helms and Brandon Graber with two points each.  Barr-Reeve was 12-17 from the free throw line compared to 8-10 for WC. The Barr-Reeve boys’ record moves to 9-2 on the season.
Austin Jarrett and Adam Joyce led the Cardinals with 15 points each.
There was no boys’ junior varsity game as WC does not have a junior varsity team.
Next up for the Vikings will be a Blue Chip Conference Battle when they travel to Loogootee this Saturday. The junior varsity boys will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the varsity game will kick off at 5:30.
