Barr-Reeve Lady Vikings defeat Linton 52-34 to end regular season at 19-1
By Louie Kavanaugh Jr.
Class 1A number 3 ranked Barr-Reeve Lady Vikings ended their regular season with an impressive win over the Linton Miners and now set their sights on the sectional which is scheduled to begin Tuesday when the Vikings take on the Lions of Loogootee at Loogootee.  Barr-Reeve completed one of the best seasons in Barr-Reeve Lady Basketball history with a 19-1 regular season and is now 37-3 in the past two regular seasons.  This would be the final time these seniors would play on Barr-Reeve’s Kavanaugh Kourt, a place where they have made history over their high school career.
The Miners kept it interesting early as the Vikings fronted just 9-8 before the Vikings went on a 9-0 run that put them in front 16-8 after one quarter of play.  Liz Horton picked up two fouls early and she went to the bench midway thru the first period.  Hilliary Fox took up the slack as she scored 12 points in the first half and 5 other players scored for the Vikings in the first half and the Vikings led at halftime was 30-17.
Linton hit a 3-pointer to start the third period which cut the Vikings lead to 30-20 but that was as close as the Miners would get the rest of the game.  Linton hung tough in the last half but just could not slow the Vikings down as BR increased the margin to 47-28 after three periods.  Morganne Doyle hit a free throw to start the fourth period and Hilliary Fox hit a basket to give BR their biggest lead of the night at 50-28.  The Vikings ran a delay game for a large portion of the fourth period as the Vikings scored just 5 points and Linton managed just 6 for a final score of 52-34.
After the games Coach Mark Holt had high praise for this group of seniors and this senior class saying, “This class will truly be missed, not only in basketball, but in all sports at Barr-Reeve and in the classroom.  They are some very good students and I don’t know of another class that has had such a good group of athletes.  It is truly a special class and they will be missed.”  When asked about the Linton team Holt replied, “This Miner team was 14-6 coming into tonight and they made us work for what we got.  It did not come easy and, of course, that is the way we wanted it as we are preparing for sectional and we didn’t want to go into it winning easily by forty points and not having to work for it.  I think this will definitely help us get ready for next week.”  The seniors include Hilliary Fox, Liz Horton, Audrey Blair, Morganne Doyle, Kylee O’Connor and Terrell Miller, who is out for the season with a knee injury.
Hilliary Fox led the Vikings with 14 points and she pulled down 15 rebounds and had 5 steals.  Liz Horton was also in double figures with 13 points on three 3-pointers.  Audrey Blair and Morganne Doyle both had 7 points each, Tya Harmon with 5, Lindsey Graber with 4 and Kylee O’Connor with 2.  Barr-Reeve was 2-5 from the line while Linton was perfect at 10-10.  The Vikings out rebounded Linton 29-25 and in turnovers, Linton had 14 to Barr-Reeve’s 13.
In the junior varsity contest, the Vikings fell to the Miners 41-37.  The Vikings fell behind by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter and came back and cut the lead to 1 point but was not able to overtake Linton. The junior varsity Vikings end their season at 8-11 and 3-5 in conference play.
