Seventh grade Lions win opening tourney at Rivet
7th Grade Invitational.JPG
The seventh graders fared well at Vincennes Rivet as they kicked off their season with two victories to claim the annual tourney. In the first game, the Lions man-handled Washington Catholic 61-26 as Hayden Bell exploded for 25 points. Darian Stewart tallied eight points as did Austin Mesarosh on a perfect 4-4 shooting performance.  Jordan Berry, Frank Bratton, and Josh Sibrel scored four with Gabe Nolley and Dylan Street each making one shot. Ben Blackwell also added four points while contributing team-highs in rebounds with eight to go with four assists. In the championship, Stewart out-scored Holy Family by himself as his 19 propelled Loogootee to a dominant 43-14 win. Stewart rang up 11 and Bell hit a bucket as the locals led 13-0 after one quarter.  By halftime, the bulge was 25-2 as Coach Kavanaugh was able to rotate his squad of 14 in the last twelve minutes.  Blackwell hit for eight and pulled down four caroms.  Bell recorded six, Nolley and Street four each, and Sibrel one hoop.  Meanwhile, the eighth graders were not nearly as fortunate. With W.C. unable to field an eighth grade entry, Rivet asked a very talented Sullivan team to replace the Cards. The Lions hung on in the first half, leading 8-7 after one stanza, and down just 18-15 at intermission.  However, the outcome ended 41-25 as the Golden Arrows had four players finish with at least eight markers. Brandon Wilz popped for eight, Matt Mathies seven, Casey Miller scored six all in the final frame, and Gage Harder and Dirk Fahey both scored a basket in the first half.  Both teams travel to Kavanaugh Kourt to take on rival Barr-Reeve on Tuesday night.
