Wooda, Coulda’, Shoulda’
By John Mullen
Monday night at Jack Butcher Arena featured a Blue Chip make-up game between the host Lady Lions and visiting Wood Memorial. The contest had been cancelled back on January 7th when a wintery blast arrived with snow. The affair might be described as a woulda’, coulda’, shoulda’ opportunity because Loogootee certainly possesses the personnel to compete and probably beat their BCC counterpart, but on this night it was Wood that prevailed 57-45.
Weary legs from road games on both Thursday night and Saturday afternoon may have doomed Loogootee, but in essence, the Trojans stuck the ball in the hole for a very high percentage, especially in the second half. The Lady Lions’ Wynter Wagoner was hot early, going for eight points in the first frame, and Kelci Mann threw in eight of her own in the second stanza as the hosts built a three-point, 26-23 lead, at intermission.
Wood’s Whitney Malin caught fire in the third to the tune of three treys, and she and her teammates bombed in baskets from all over as the clock wound down. Loogootee was tied up at 35’s before a devastating 7-0 run to end the third frame pretty much ended their chances of sewing up an eleventh ‘W’. Malin stuck her fifth 3 in the final eight minutes, and she and Andrea Nossett both connected on 4-4 free throws to take the margin up to a dozen. Mann recorded a team-high 15, Wagoner made 12, and Tia Pennington 10. Waynessa Burch scored six, and Audra Lannan knocked down two free tosses late in the game. Malin, after being held to just seven early, finished with 23.
The Lions sit at 10-7 with three regular season contests remaining. The last regular season home affair takes place on Thursday where Mann, Burch, Lannan, and Kayla Dant will be honored on Senior Night against the South Knox Lady Spartans.
